The Guadeloupe-based band was first formed in 1979 and was founded by former members of Les Vikings de Guadeloupe. The band’s earliest influences can be attributed to Dominican, Haitian, and Guadeloupean kadans, such as Experience 7, Exile One, and Tabou Combo. Perhaps what makes Kassav stand out from the rest, is their application of MIDI technology.
The French band released their debut album, Love and Kadance, in 1979. However, they didn’t have their breakthrough until 1985 after releasing their album, Yelele, which spawned the international hit “Zouk la se sel medikaman nou ni.” The group gained further traction as they continued to progress their musical style, fusing elements of disco and techno into their songs, as well. Anyone looking for a unique cultural music experience won’t want to pass up getting Kassav tickets.
Throughout the years, they have released over a dozen albums, with five having peaked on the French album charts. A couple of their most popular albums are K Toz (2004) and Nou la (2000), which peaked as No. 31 and No. 41 on the French Album charts (SNICOP). Many of their singles have topped the French Song charts as well, such as “Sye bwa” and “Solei.” Kassav has been known to tour with other renowned bands like The Jacksons, Keziah Jones, and MEDI.
