Pruitt was raised in the Atlanta area of Georgia and went to a Catholic school. At a very young age, she began performing in musical theatre productions. In middle school, she began learning the guitar with her mother, who taught her simple chords and hymns. While attending community college in Athens, Georgia, Pruitt continued to perform at open mic nights.

She studied at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she played with a band and won the first annual BMI Foundation Nashville Songwriting Scholarship. Pruitt was named the Buddy Holly Prize winner from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017, as well as signing with Round Hill Records. In 2018, Rolling Stone referred to her as one of 10 new country artists you need to know and NPR named her one of the 20 artists to watch, noting Pruitt's "sky-high, nuanced, and emotive voice" and her ability to write with "devastating honesty." She was also a nominee for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2020 Americana Music Honors & Awards.
