Hear a top-40 group from the 1990s with Klymaxx tickets. The all-female band Klymaxx was formed in 1979 by Bernadette Cooper, who produced, sang and played drums. In the original group along with Cooper was lead vocalist Lorena Porter Shelby, guitarist Cheryl Cooley and keyboardists Robbin Grider and Lynn Malsby. The band’s name was created by Cooper.
The band was joined by producer, bassist and singer Joyce “Fenderella” Irby before the group recorded its first album. Cooper became the frontwoman for the band. Their debut album, Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman, was released in 1981. One year later, their follow-up album Girls will be Girls was released.

The band achieved stardom in 1984, with the release of Meeting in the Ladies Room, spawning two hit singles. “The Men All Pause” reached #5 on the Billboard R&B chart. Their breakthrough hit was “I Miss You,” which peaked at #5 on the Hot 100. Cooper wrote and produced much of Klymaxx’s lyrics and music. She began to compose songs for other artists. The group disbanded in 1989 and reformed in the early 2000s. On June 25, 2021, the group was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame
