Based out of Toronto, Ontario, Kobo Town plays a distinctive style of calypso music that incorporates elements from genres as diverse as zouk, reggae and hip hop. Gonsalves was born in Diego Martin, Trinidad, but moved with his parents to Ottawa when he was thirteen. In his teens, the artist turned to music and songwriting as a way to cope with the unfamiliarity of his new environment, and by 2004 had founded Kobo Town.
Kobo Town released their debut album Independence in 2007, which was a runaway success. Independence would earn the group both a CMFA and Indie Award. They rose to fame, however, through their sophomore effort Jumbie in the Jukebox. The album earned a nod for a Polaris Music Prize and a Juno Award in the early 2010s. In 2017 Kobo Town’s release Where the Galleon Sank won the Canadian Folk Music Award for World Group of the Year and the Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year.
