The plot follows an arriving French count who encounters various obstacles during his journey to win the Countess so he disguises himself as a hermit where village girls and peasants gather to listen to this holy man's advice on matters of the heart. Rossini's most colorful orchestral writing is found in this opera, but it doesn't overwhelm. The quaint overture ends with a whisper of pizzicato strings that are surprisingly restrained and unassuming for such a work as this one.
