Jay Popoff and Sean Holland met to perform a show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood. Realizing they had a remarkable creative synergy, the musicians recorded and released their New Vibe Revolution EP in 1993. 

Lit signed with the Malicious Vinyl record label, through which they released their first full-length album Tripping the Light Fantastic in 1997. They developed a dedicated following as a result of their ensuing tours with bands like Radish and Reel Big Fish. Lit rose to international fame with the release of their 1999 album A Place in the Sun, which contained their hit song “My Own Worst Enemy.” The song stayed at the top of Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart for nearly three months straight and earned Billboard’s award for Biggest Modern Rock Song of the Year. A Place in the Sun went on to be certified platinum. Through several more charting hits the band became one of the most significant in alternative rock.
