She is best known for creating dance experiences incorporating such influences as shipbuilders, physicists and construction workers.

Lerman grew up moving around, spending time in Milwaukee, Wisc. When she attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Mich., she was part of a group that danced for President Kennedy. In college, her mentor was Martha Wittman at Bennington College in Vermont.  She earned a Bachelor’s in Dance from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts in dance from George Washington University.

She has won many awards, including the 2014 Dance/USA Honor Award,  2017 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award and the American Choreographer Award.
