In 1995 he released his first EP. His group Lootpack released "III Psyche Move.". This EP got them noticed by Stone Throw Record Label, who would sign the group in 1998.
Lootpack released their first full-length album in 1999. Soon after, Madlib began his career as a producer. In 2000, his first solo album was released under the guise Quasimoto.
He stepped away from pure hip hop in the early 2000s to form a jazz-hip hop group known as Yesterday's New Quintet. He came back to hip hop in 2005 to release his sophomore record titled "The Further Adventures of Lord Quas"
