During school, Cohn played with a local band named Doanbrook Hotel. During college, Cohn took up piano and began performing in coffeehouses around Los Angeles.

Years later, in 1991, Cohn released his debut solo album entitled Marc Cohn. The album was certified gold one year later, and certified platinum in 1996. The album was helped by the breakout success of the single “Walking in Memphis,” which was based on a trip Cohn took to Memphis in 1986. “Walking in Memphis” reached number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1991 and earned Cohn Grammy nominations for “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal.” As Marc Cohn tickets rose to an all-time high in demand, the singer/songwriter released a star-studded second album entitled The Rainy Season.
