His dad was the blues guitarist known as Marvin King, who was well known in the Carolinas. Marcus picked up a guitar at an early age and began performing with his dad during his adolescent years. In his teenage years, he formed a band and began performing at clubs. His first sign of success came when he was seen playing at Norman’s Guitars, which had millions of views on YouTube.

The Marcus King Band was formed in 2013. Bandmates included Stephen Campbell (bass), Jack Ryan (drums) and Justin Johnson (trumpet/trombone). Chris Spies (saxophone) and Dane Farnsworth (keyboards) were also added to the band. Their debut album, Soul Sights, was released in 2015 under Evil Teen Records. The album charted on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart. The Marcus King Band was released in 2016 and Carolina Confessions in 2018 under Fantasy Records.
