The Maryland Terrapins, commonly referred to as the Terps, represent the University of Maryland, College Park in NCAA Division I sports and compete in the Big 10 Conference. The University was first established in 1856, and its Baseball and Football programs started soon after.

The school is best known for its Football program whose first game was played in 1890 and has been a significant player in college football since, creating a massive demand for Maryland Terrapins tickets. The team saw marginal success early on, but it wasn’t until 1946, under the leadership of head coach Jim Tatum, that they began to dominate. Under Tatum’s leadership, the Terps posted a record of 73-15-4 without a single losing season. They were awarded the national football championship in 1951 and 1953.  They also secured a Southern Conference championship and two Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Jim Tatum coached the Terps from 1946 to 1955 and is still the winningest coach in Maryland University history. 

Along with football, the Terrapins are also well known for their Men’s Basketball program, which was established in 1923 but wouldn’t begin to see real success until 1969 under head coach Lefty Driesell who served as head coach from 1969. During Driesell’s tenure as head coach, the Terrapins made eight NCAA Tournament appearances. They claimed one National Invitation Tournament championship, two Atlantic Coast Conference championships and one Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship. Driesell coached the team from 1969 to 1986.

Other notable sports programs at the University include Women’s Basketball, Field Hockey, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse and Men’s Soccer, each of which has claimed at least one national championship while making several NCAA Tournament Appearances.
