Born in 1975 in Honolulu, Jennings learned guitar and songwriting as a teenager. He soon moved to Minneapolis to pursue a career in music, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1997. He formed the Mason Jennings Band the following year, with which he began touring widely.
Jennings released his sophomore album Birds Flying Away with the band in 2000, which established his signature style of writing from the perspective of rural characters. He recorded two more albums over the next three years, all of which he released through his self-created Architect Records label. In 2005 he signed with Glacial Pace following a series of collaborations with Modest Mouse.
In the late 2000s, Jennings met and befriended star artist Jack Johnson, with whom he went on to tour widely. He released his 2008 album In the Ever through Johnson’s label, then had a number of songs featured in the documentary 180° South. Jennings was recently honored with a star on First Avenue for his contributions to the music culture of Minneapolis.
