Born in New York City, his family moved to California while he was a child where he would eventually meet his future bandmates. He briefly attended Sarah Larence College before leaving to focus on music.
Bemis formed Say Anything in 2000, releasing their debut album, Baseball, the following year. The band saw a major breakthrough following 2004’s ...Is a Real Boy which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart with help from the massive emo scene hit “Alive With the Glory of Love” which reached No. 28 on the Alternative singles chart. Bemis has toured the world with the group and released a number of albums including 2007’s In Defense of the Genre and 2014’s Hebrews. He has also performed as a member of the group Two Tongues alongside Saves the Day frontman Chris Conley and in the duo Perma with his wife Sherri DuPree-Bemis. In 2019 he released the single “Piss King” and can also be seen performing solo sets of original music and from his other projects.
