Max Creek was born in 1971 when the founding members met at the Hartt College of Music, bonding over their shared love of American folk-rock. The band originally played folk and country music but expanded their style with the addition of electric guitarist Scott Murawski. As bands like the Grateful Dead began to enjoy widespread success, Max Creek adopted elements from psychedelic rock into their sound and started heavily improvising during their live shows. 

Despite a number of lineup changes in the coming years, Max Creek enjoyed significant popularity due to their interactive, electric performances. They have been cited as an influence on bands like Phish and Guster and set the tone for a generation of touring musicians that would succeed them.
