The Ohio-based country-rock band was first formed in 1972 and was founded by Terry Efaw and Steve Reis. The two first played together while in the band Scotch & Soda. However, after adding in lead singer and guitarist Bobby E. McNelley, the group renamed itself to McGuffey Lane in the representation of Reis’s childhood home. They released their first self-titled album in 1980 to moderate commercial success.
Upon its release, more than 40,000 copies of McGuffey Lane (1980) were sold, enticing Atco Records to sign the group to its label and reissue the debut album. After gaining exposure while touring with the Charlie Daniels Band and the Allman Brothers Band, they released Aqua Dream (1980). The album was the first of theirs to make it onto the Billboard 200. McGuffey Lane’s subsequent albums were nearly just as successful. Let the Hard Times Roll (1983) and Day by Day (1984) ended up peaking as No. 61 and No. 56 on the Top Country Albums chart respectively. Country rock fans of the ‘70s will not want to miss out on getting McGuffey Lane tickets while the group is touring.
Given the popularity of their albums, it is to no surprise that the group dropped a handful of hit songs. Among others, “Long Time Lovin’ You” and “Start It All Over” were some of their most famous hits. The former peaked as No. 85 on the Billboard Hot 100, whereas the latter peaked as No. 97. Several of their songs made it onto the Hot Country Songs chart as well, such as “Day by Day”, which peaked as No. 44.
