In 1970, the directors of McLean’s Academy for Musical Arts sought out Dingwall Fleary to organize an amateur orchestra in order to provide nonprofessional musicians with a chance at musical excellence around the community. The success of this orchestra is unprecedented. It has been fifty years since they were founded and the founder's families had some big expectations for their work with what would eventually grow into an amateur community music group in the Northern Virginia area. They have had many enthusiasts over the years including the famous Robert Ames, the Washington Post editor, and his wife became the first Board of Directors for this exceptional orchestra.

The orchestra started with just 18-25 musicians, but now nearly 60 players can be seen on any given night as they perform wide-ranging classical orchestral pieces alongside popular tunes written specifically for this ensemble. In addition to their many local performances, they have also performed at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center, Strathmore Hall and the Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts.
