Home games for the Lakers are played at the Mercyhurst Ice Center, which has seating for 1,500. The rink was built in 1991. It is also home to the Mercyhurst Lakers women’s ice hockey team and served as the host site for the 1995 NCAA Division II Hockey Championships.

Fred Lane, who had been a founding member of the Gannon University Golden Knights, and was named MVP his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.  Following the 1987-88 season, he was replaced by Rick Gotkin. For the 1988-89 season, the team moved to Division II and played in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Mercyhurst transitioned from Division II to Division I in May of 1998.

The Lakers have made multiple appearances in the NCAA tournament, including two Division III championship appearances in the 1990s. The team continued its success throughout each division with DI and DII postseason appearances. Program alumnus Jamie Hunt played in the NHL. Other notable players include Nick Jones, T.J. Kemp and Ryan Zapolski.
