Working with artists such as the rapper Chipmunk and musician and actor Ashley Thomas, also known as Bashy, Kiwanuka had a chance to build his musical chops before emerging as a solo artist.

Kiwanuka has developed and honed a signature sound, characterized by his insightful lyrics, elegant guitar work, and soulful vocal performances. His influences include Bill Withers, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens. The intricate musicianship on Kiwanuka’s records also points to the singer/songwriter’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist. Kiwanuka can play bass guitar and keyboards in addition to his primary instrument, guitar.

Michael Kiwanuka tickets began to spring up at venues around London once Kiwanuka began working with Communion Records. Co-founded by Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons, Communion Records is known for having an eye for talent and has previously worked with Bastille, Lewis Capaldi, George Ezra and James Bay, among others. Communion helped Kiwanuka release his first two EPs, I’m Getting Ready and Tell Me A Tale. Kiwanuka eventually signed with Polydor Records, who helped the artist transition into the release of full albums.  

Home Again, Michael Kiwanuka’s first album was released in 2012 to a warm reception from critics. It also garnered praise from many well-known musicians, including John Mayer. The year before Home Again was released, Kiwanuka was brought on the road by none other than Adele. Across his albums Home Again, Love & Hate and Kiwanuka, the singer/songwriter continues to build upon his signature sound and look toward the future of folk-pop music.
