Monuments formed in London in 2007 and spent a number of years refining their idiosyncratic signature sound. They were signed to Century Media Records in 2012, releasing their debut album Gnosis through the label later that year. Monuments gained a significant boost in exposure when they performed on the Euroblast European Tour, where they played alongside high-profile acts like Stealing Axion and Jeff Loomis. 

In 2014 the band released their sophomore album The Amanuensis, which received widespread critical acclaim. Despite a series of lineup changes in the years that followed, Monuments played at prominent events like the Download Festival and the Hevy Festival. The band is widely regarded as leading artists in the djent subgenre, a type of heavy metal marked by complex rhythms, experimental song structure and free jazz improvisation.
