Original members were Pavel Vovk, Artyom Kritsin, Alexander Kholenko, Oleg Pungin and Illya Lagutenko. They take their name from the children’s book series by Tove Jansson. Lagutenko founded the group, filling out the lineup before the band released their debut album Novaya Luna Aprelya in 1985.
Despite a brief hiatus in the early 90s due to Lagutenko’s conscription into the Russian navy, Mumiy Troll reunited in 1995 to release their first studio album Morskaya, which was a runaway success. In 2001. Mumiy Troll performed on behalf of Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest, where they were a top fifteen finalist. The group’s burgeoning popularity saw them enjoy success in film, contributing songs to a slew of Russian blockbusters, most notably Nightwatch.
In the mid-2010s Mumiy Troll set off on a world tour on a 19th-century sailing ship, then performed at several prominent events like the South by Southwest Festival, Zandari Festa and the Visual Japan Summit.
