Formed in San Diego in 1989 by multi-instrumentalist Chris Thile and siblings Sara Watkins on fiddle and Sean Watkins on guitar, they played mostly on the festival circuit until bluegrass legend Alison Krauss heard them and produced their Grammy-nominated self-titled debut album, which went to number 13 on Billboard's Top Country Albums Chart in 2002.

Their other bluegrass number ones are Grammy-nominated 'Why Should the Fire Die' (2005), 'Reasons Why (The Very Best)' (2006) and 'A Dotted Line' (2014), which also topped the Americana/Folk Albums Chart and reached number seven on the Billboard 200.

They have received three Grammy Award nominations for Best Country Instrumental Performance for 'Ode to a Butterfly' (2000), 'Smoothie Song' (2002) and 'Scotch & Chocolate' (2005). In the past, they have toured with artists such as Lyle Lovett, Vince Gill and Amy Grant.
