A fervent and consummate jazz aficionado, Dr. VanVelsor was instrumental in bringing Dixieland and Traditional jazz to the event, held annually in Wilmington.

A who’s who of contemporary jazz greats have been on-stage in the festival, including Art Hodes, Milt Hinton and Keter Betts. Other notable acts that have taken part in the festival include Bobby Rosengarden, Tony DiNicola and Johnny Frigo. The event has taken place now for more than 40 years. In 2021 the festival was held virtually via livestream.
