Death metal band Obscura was formed in Landshut, Germany in 2002. Obscura is the brainchild of vocalist and guitarist Steffen Kummerer. The band's lineup features drummer David Diepold, guitarist and singer Christian Munzner and bass player Jeroen Paul Thesseling. The band first gained attention through performing local shows around southern Germany in 2003. In 2005, the band self-released its debut album, Retribution. The album gained the band wider popularity throughout central Europe and led them to perform at the biggest metal music festivals in Europe. The death metal band's music often features extraordinarily complex arrangements, challenging time signatures and lyrics based on the writings of German philosophers such as Arthur Schopenhauer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schelling. Although the band is generally regarded as death metal, the term barely covers the wide-ranging scope of Obscura's work.

The band released its second studio album, Cosmogenesis in 2009 after signing a new deal with Relapse Records. This sent the group on its first tour across North America as a supporting act for The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse and Atheist. After a two-year hiatus, Obscura returned in 2011 with the album Omnivium which landed at number 11 in the U.S. on the Top Heatseekers chart upon its release. Obscura has continued to gain international fame with the release of their studio albums Akroasis (2016), Diluvium (2018) and A Valediction (2021). These albums have encouraged an almost fanatical following among fans and have projected the group to become one of the most significant talents to emerge from the death metal scene.
