They began as the Owatonna Express in Minnesota in 2008, formed as a substitute for the Southern Minnesota Express when the latter team moved out of the city. The newly formed Express played out of the Steele County Fairgrounds for their first three years, as part of the Central Division. In 2011 the team moved to Texas and became the Odessa Jackalopes.

As the Express, the team enjoyed three back-to-back winning seasons, playing their best in 2010 with a 32-19 record. The Express also advanced to the playoffs in all three seasons. The Jackalopes returned in their first season and two more times in the first decade of the new franchise. The team currently plays the majority of its games out of Ector County Coliseum and has three affiliates across the NA3HL and NAPHL. Head Coach and GM of Hockey Operations Scott Deur joined the Jackalopes in 2021 after six years as an assistant with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. In that time, he helped the team to four Midwest Division championships, a Robertson Cup in 2016 and an NAHL regular-season championship in 2017-18.
