Paul Ziert founded the team in 1981. In his time at Oklahoma, Ziert led the team to multiple regional championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Becky Switzer took over the team and led the team to its first conference championship. Switzer’s teams would repeat that four more times in her time as coach. She also led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1985.

The team has won multiple NCAA National Championships, most notably in 2014, when Oklahoma tied with Florida to become the first-even co-champions.
