Formed by Andy McCluskey, co-founder Paul Humphreys along with Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw. Although the lineup has constantly changed McCluskey has always been a part of this English electronic band which was formed in 1978 in Wirral, Merseyside. OMD were pioneers in the field of electronic music, combining an experimental, minimalist approach with a pop sensibility to become key figures in the late 1970's/early 1980s development of synth-pop.

In 1977, the Id was formed by John Peel and Gary Humphreys as a precursor to OMD. The band's image was unaccepted by the music press, which exacerbated an already tense situation. The band gained popularity across Europe with the anti-war song "Enola Gay" from their album Architecture & Morality (1981) and so did OMD tickets. In 1985, they released Junk Culture which was more radio-friendly and resulted in greater success in America.

In 1989, Humphreys and other band members left OMD to start the spin-off group the Listening Pool, leaving McCluskey as the lone remaining member. While Humphreys collaborated with Propaganda vocalist Claudia Brücken to form Onetwo, McCluskey formed pop girl group Atomic Kitten, for which he served as a principal songwriter. In 2006, the band re-emerged with Humphreys and McCluskey writing material more akin to their early work; The Punishment of Luxury (2017), which was the group's seventh UK Top 10 album. They've made 12 top 20 singles on the UK Singles Chart and three top 20 hits in the United States. OMD has sold over 40 million records worldwide.
