The story takes place in the Caribbean Sea where a peasant girl uses the mysterious power of love to bring diverse people from different social classes together. The Original Broadway production ran from 1990 to 1991 in which the original cast consisted of LaChanze as Ti Moune, Jerry Dixon as Daniel, Andrea Frierson as Erzulie and Sheila Gibbs as Mama Euralie. The West End production ran in 1994 and won the 1995 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The Original Broadway show was nominated for multiple Tony Awards, a few nominations include Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

The musical made a comeback on Broadway in a production that opened in the Circle in the Square Theatre in December of 2017. The incredible debut of this production included a sand-covered stage, live animals on stage and a marvelous set to allude to a devastated beach community recuperating from a hurricane. This opening cast was made up of Hailey Kilgore as Ti Moune, Isaac Powell as Daniel, Alysha Deslorieux as Andrea, Phillip Boykin as Tonton Julian and Kenita R. Miller as Mama Euralie. After coming back in 2017, it won the Best Revival of a Musical Tony Award in 2018.
