Oscar Emilio Leon Simoza was born on July 11, 1943, in Caracas, Venezuela. He started out having a strong interest in percussion and was self-taught how to play the upright bass. He was an auto mechanic by day and then a bass player at night for local conjuntos. During the 1980s, De Leon achieved success in salsa music, infamously being dubbed as a Caribbean music singer.
In 1982, he visited Cuba in a major cultural event for the island country. Because local preferences in music had drifted away from traditional Cuban sounds, De Leon's "retro" style of music became extremely popular among Cubans of all ages. He has had successful tours throughout America, Spain, Japan, and other parts all over the world. He was even the first Latino to sign a contract with the BBC. De Leon was named Best Salsa Artist at the Pepsi Venezuela Music Awards in 2014.
