Travers grew up in the Toronto area and first started playing guitar at the age of 12. After seeing a concert by Jimi Hendrix in Toronto, he started playing in rock bands as a teenager, first with a Canadian band called the Music Machine, then Red Hot and Merge, performing at venues around Quebec, where he was noticed by Ronnie Hawkins, who asked Travers to play with him.

Recording on that album with Travers was bassist Peter “Mars” Cowling. Cowling would continue to perform with Travers as Travers put his band together, which also included guitarist Pat Thrall and drummer Tommy Aldridge. Their first album as the Pat Travers Band, Heat in the Street, was released in 1978.

The band has had some turnover over the years. The current lineup, as of 2021, consists of Travers, bassist David Pastorious and drummer Tommy Craig. Travers continues to be respected in the industry, being referred to by Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big fame as a “guitar god” and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett listing him as one of his favorite guitarists.
