Growing up, her sister taught herself to play the piano and her father played bass in a polka band, so it is no surprise that Cole fell in love with music at an early age. She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she studied Jazz under Bob Stolof. After graduating, Cole moved to San Francisco to pursue music. She gained international exposure when she was chosen to replace Sinead O’Connor on Peter Gabriel’s Secret World tour. A video of the concert was shot and released as Secret World Live which received the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video.

Her first album, Harbinger, was released in 1994 shortly after the tour. The breakout single “I Am So Ordinary” was so popular it was made into a black and white music video. Two years later, she self-produced her second album This Fire. The album’s singles, “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and “I Don’t Want To Wait," reached No. 8 and No. 11 on Billboard’s Pop Charts. The latter song even became the theme song for the popular teen drama Dawson’s Creek.
