He also spent most of his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Hillbilly Ranch, a legendary Country music nightclub in Boston. In 1956, Rowan formed his first band, the Cupids, while he was still in High School. Peter began his musical career in 1963 as the singer, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter for the Bluegrass Boys. This band was led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. Rowan loved the edgy sound of Monroe’s bluegrass music.

Peter Rowan got involved with many rock, folk, and bluegrass music projects. Some of the projects included Earth Opera, Sea Train, and Muleskinner. In the 1970’s, Rowan decided to go solo. He released a couple of records including Dustbowl Children, Yonder, The First Whippoorwill, and Bluegrass Boy. In his Dustbowl Children album, he collaborated with his daughter to write the song “On the Wings of Horses.” Peter continues to play as a solo artist especially when he travels internationally, but while he is in the states, he plays with three bands. The three bands included Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Big Twang Theory and its Texas Cousin Twang n Groove, and The Free Mexican Air Force.
