While he was born in Thailand, Viphurit lived in New Zealand from the age of nine and learned to play the drums and then the guitar throughout his childhood. After returning to Thailand to attend university for film studies, Phum Viphurit began composing and posting covers and original music on YouTube before signing to Rats Records, an indie label. His debut album, Manchild, dropped in 2017, but it wouldn’t be until the following year that he achieved critical acclaim for his single “Lover Boy," which has more than 92 million listens on Spotify.
While his music carries the essence of neo-soul and indie with sweet and dreamy lyrics and catchy beats, Phum Viphurit also covers more intense and socially-sensitive subjects in his songs like suicide, fake sentiments and substance abuse. This is firmly reflected in his second LP The Greng Jai Piece, with ‘greng jai’ as its name in Thailand referring to the practice of politeness that is familiar within Asian cultures.
