The Pittsburg Interscholastic Athletic Association oversees and regulates the Pittsburg Hisgh School State Basketball Championship. The Pittsburg Interscholastic Athletic Association was established in 1913 and oversees intermediate school, middle school, junior high and senior high school interscholastic competition. The year 1920 was the first year that basketball playoffs were established. Girls basketball was instituted in 1973.
The PIAA segregates schools into six different classifications based upon school attendance. As of the 2020-2021 season, 1A is for schools with 91 or less male enrollees. The 2A class is for 92 to 140 male attendees and 3A is for 141 to 209. Class 4A schools contain 210 to 304 male students, while 5A schools have 305 to 504 males enrolled and 6A is for enrollment of over 504 male students.

These regions are further subdivided into 12 districts, with 1-4, 11 and 12 being in the East District and the remainder being in the West District.
