His heritage is Sephardic Jew and his family was based in Spain, Spanish Morocco and French Algeria. His work has been described variously as world music, folk and New Age as well as Celtic and even chamber jazz.

Bensusan’s family relocated to Paris when he was the age of four. He began to study piano and classical music at the age of seven. When he was eleven, his father gave him a steel-string acoustic guitar. After a friend taught Bensusan some chords, he began to teach himself how to play and signed a record deal to release his first album by the age of 17.

Bensusan’s first album, Pres du Paris, was released in 1975, which took home the Grand Prix du Disque at the Montreux Festival. He has released more than a dozen albums. He also has written three books on guitar playing and theory.
