Home games are played in the TaxSlayer Center which was formerly known as The Mark of the Quad Cities until 2007. It was the iWireless Center until 2017 when it got the name the TaxSlayer Center. The center is located in Moline, Illinois and seats 9,200 when configured for Ice Hockey.

That team was replaced by the Quad City Flames. When the Flames left, a new Mallards was the team was fielded in the International Hockey League.

The team originated as the Louisiana IceGators which began play in the SPHL in 2009.  The IceGators came to the Quad Cities in 2018. The name Mallards was not available due to trademark issues, so the team ownership held a name-the-team contest and the name The Storm was chosen. The first coach for the Storm was Dave Pszenyczny, who was a longtime player in the SPHL.
