Qwanqwa was founded by Hostetter in 2012 after he moved to Addis Ababa following the breakup of his former group Debo Band. He soon recruited veteran musicians Asmamaw, Seyoum and Sendeku to join, establishing Qwanqwa’s vision of playing a mix of traditional Ethiopian music and experimental stylings. They soon became known throughout the city for their soulful instrumentation and performances in unconventional settings. In 2014 they released their debut album Volume One through FPE Records.
The band has since collaborated with several high-profile world music artists including Jeroen Visser and Paal Nilssen-Love. Qwanqwa has garnered considerable acclaim for their vibrant, free-flowing signature style that often mimics sounds from nature. They frequently combine traditional instrumentation with distortion pedals and found objects.
