Requiem, a one-act ballet, was created in 1976 by Kenneth MacMillan using Gabriel Faure’s Requiem for music. MacMillan dedicated the ballet to his friend John Cranko, the director of the Stuttgart Ballet. It debuted in Stuttgart at the end of 1976. Later in 1983, MacMillan recreated it for the Royal Ballet in London. 

The choreography reflects drawings and paintings by William Blake, including those from Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost and the Biblical book of Job. It begins with mourners entering with a young woman raised high like an offering. She proceeds to dance through the Offertorium and Sanctus before comforting a woman during the Agnus Dei. During the final part, In Paradisum, all the dancers turn their backs to the audience and leave the stage bathed in light. 

MacMillan received much praise for Requiem, and audiences loved the combination of dancing, singing and instrumental music. Even though the original music was considered sacred, the ballet is moving and poetic, rather than overly religious.
