While living there, he met harpist Curtis Salgado and the two formed the Robert Cray Band. 

The band has many members and not all of them perform at every show. The group features artists like bassist Richard Cousins, saxophonist Andrew Love, and guitarist Tim Kaihatsu. The band has had over 20 studio releases, with 15 of those singles topping the Billboard charts. In the early 1990s, the band collaborated with John Lee Hooker on the title track of his album Mr. Lucky.
