Born in Bethesda in 1947, Gordon fell in love with music as a child after encountering the work of Elvis Presley. Artists like Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and Billy Lee Riley also proved formative influences on Gordon’s later sound. As a teenager, he joined the band The Confidentials, with whom he made his recording debut in 1964.
In the early ‘70s, Gordon moved to New York City, where for a number of years he performed with the punk rock band The Tuff Darts. He got his big break however when he was discovered by producer Richard Gottehrer. Gottehrer was inspired by Gordon’s similarity to early Elvis and introduced Gordon to legendary guitarist Link Wray. The pair released Robert Gordon with Link Wray in 1977, which earned widespread critical acclaim. The album remains seen as largely responsible for the rockabilly revival of the late '70s and early '80s. Gordon still tours to a devoted cult following today.
