The men’s professional soccer team Rochester New York FC, sometimes called either Rochester or RNY, formerly called the Rochester Rhinos, competes in the MSL Next Pro league. RNY is the only team outside of the MLS to win the U.S. Open Cup since MLS was established.
The Rochester Raging Rhinos soccer team was established in 1996 and competed in the original A-League. In its first season, the team reached the championship game and finished as runner-up. The A-League merged with the USISL in 1997, and a new A-League was established. In 1998, the team again made it to the championship game, this time becoming champions of the new A-League.

The team competed in the U.S. Open Cup in 1999, ultimately facing the Colorado Rapids of the MSL, winning 2-0 to become U.S. Open Cup champions for the first time. Other championships for the team include A-League championships in 2000 and 2001. The team was considered to become an expansion team for the MLS in 2005.
In 2021, the Rhinos were rebranded as Rochester New York FC, including the introduction of a new logo, featuring Rochester’s High Falls waterfall. In 2022, RNY was the first team to become part of the MSL Next Pro league.

Rochester Rhinos Soccer Game Schedule
The North American Soccer League uses a split-schedule approach. Teams play from April through November with a four-week break in July. The playoffs take place in November with the winning team taking home the Soccer Bowl trophy. Teams are also eligible to play in the U.S. Open Cup, a tournament with every semi-pro and professional American club. The cup is normally a summer tournament taking place between early June and late August. NASL squads start in the second round of the competition.
