Soon after his debut, Ruben Blades began composing salseros with Larry Harlow and Ray Barretto before recording several albums with the esteemed salsa musician Willie Colón. Their 1978 album, Siembra, would go on to become the best-selling salsa album in history. Nearly every track in the album became a hit in Latin American countries and the record sold over 25 million copies.

Ruben Blades continued touring with Son del Solar through the 1990s and won the 1997 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance with "Pena" and "Amor y Control." In 1999, Ruben Blades released the album Tiempos, with groups Sexteto de Jazz Latino and Editus. The album was awarded the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. In 2001, Ruben Blades was added to the International Latin Music Hall of Fame. He won another Grammy in 2002 with the release of Mundo.
In 2009, Ruben Blades reunited with Son del Solar. He performed the closing act for Festival Internacional Cervantino in 2014 and won a Grammy for the Best Latin Pop Album for Tangos the following year.
