The Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra was formed upon the dissolution of the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra in 1997 and was composed of almost the exact same musicians. The new Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra performs at both the Community Center Theatre and the Mondavi Center on the campus of the University of California, Davis.

The first musical director of the Sacramento was Michael Morgan, who served in that role until 2021. The Philharmonic sought to avoid the pitfalls of the Symphony and requested studies to determine the market for professional orchestral music, and the results came back that there was a substantial market for the reformed group.

Guest conductors and soloists that share the stage with the Philharmonic include Robert Moody, Musical Director of the Memphis Symphony, violinist Margaret Batjer, who made her first solo appearance with the Chicago Symphony at the age of 15 and famed violinist Elissa Lee Koljonen, the first winner of the Henryk Szeryng Foundation Award.
