Salome Concert Tickets
Discover the beauty and the controversy of Richard Strauss’s operatic sensation with Salome Opera tickets.
After seeing the original play by Oscar Wilde, Richard Strauss immediately began writing the opera. The original play was in French, but Strauss used a German libretto, translated almost word-for-word from the original by Hedwig Lachmann. While a few years after Salome’s opening Strauss wrote a French version of the opera, traditionally called Salomé (Mariotte), the original German is the more well known. The opera premiered in Dresden in 1905 and within the first year had been performed in 50 other opera houses.
Despite its immediate popularity, it was equally as controversial. Some of the original performers portraying the title character refused to participate in the Dance of the Seven Veils, so dancers were brought in to perform the dance instead. This tradition continues today and most productions have Salome portrayed by a soprano throughout the opera and a dancer brought in to perform the final dance.
Given the opera’s sensual interpretation of the Biblical story, Salome was banned in Vienna until 1918 and in London until 1907 (and then it was not performed until 1910). When Salome came to the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1907, only one performance was given before the production was shut down. Reviews had been mixed. Musicians praised the musical power of the opera, but the story was categorized as “repugnant.” It would not be performed again at The Met until 1934. Today, Salome has overcome its early controversy to become one of the most well-established pieces of the operatic repertoire.

Salome Seating Chart
As Salome performances may take place in a variety of venues, seating sections and audience capacity may change. However, opera concerts are often held in theatres which can hold large numbers of concert-goers. A venue such as the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York City holds nearly 4,000 guests across its six major seating sections. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles has four tiers of seating and able to accommodate 3,156 seats to choose for that perfect seat.
Orchestra, box seating, grand tier, dress circle and balcony sections may all be offered at a venue near you. As a general rule, those who hope for clear central views of the stage may be better served with front-of-mezzanine seats over those in the rear orchestra, as the mezzanine often overhangs the lower level.
