The Bearkats initially competed in the NAIA, then in 1982, transitioned to NCAA Division II play. The Bearkats began competing in NCAA Division I play in 1987, first as members of the Southland Conference, then joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2021. The Western Athletic Conference encompasses teams like the Abilene Christian Wildcats, the Dixie State Trailblazers and the New Mexico State Aggies.
