Voted the #1 dance troupe in a poll of readers of the San Diego Union/ Tribune and by BestOfSanDiego.com, San Diego Ballet’s mission is to “excite, enrich and entertain its diverse audience through an imaginative presentation of quality classical and contemporary dance.” Javier Velasco, artistic director of the company, has sought to fulfill this mission with his distinct choreography since San Diego Ballet’s founding in 1991. The repertoire includes more-familiar, classical pieces such as The Nutcracker and Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as original pieces such as Sweet Synergy Suite that featured the music of jazz icon Charles McPherson, The Brontes, a musical based on the lives of the three historical sisters, and Luna Lunera which included music composed by David Burge and the poetry of Garcia Lorca. The company has collaborated with other local artists, including the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Chamber Orchestra, as well as organizations such as Culture Shock and the San Diego Museum of Art.
