As a freshman at San Diego State, Faulk amassed 386 yards on 37 carries in his second game. He reached paydirt seven times. His yardage and touchdown totals stood as NCAA records for freshmen. Faulk finished second in Heisman Trophy voting after the 1992 season.
The Aztecs seem to have a knack for recruiting future professional athletes. Kawhi Leonard, who won NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors, was a member of the SDSU men’s basketball team from 2009 through 2011. His talents helped the Aztecs make the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years. Their 2011 run included wins in the first and second rounds against Northern Colorado and Temple. The eventual national champion UConn Huskies ended their championship run in the Sweet Sixteen. SDSU retired Leonard’s number in 2020, making him the first basketball player to have their number retired in Aztecs history.
