San Diego State Aztecs Tickets
Cheer on the Aztecs with your San Diego State tickets from TicketSmarter. San Diego State University was founded in 1897 and is a member of the California State University system. While it is a rather large university, only six men’s teams are sponsored at the varsity level. However, thirteen women’s teams compete, bringing the grand total to nineteen sports. SDSU football competes at the NCAA Division I FBS level and are members of the Mountain West Conference. Men’s soccer plays in the Pac-12 Conference.
SDSU baseball makes frequent appearances in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Former San Diego Padres right fielder Tony Gwynn played his college ball at San Diego State. He also played on the men’s basketball team during his college days. Gwynn coached the Aztecs from 2003 through 2014 until his tragic death. Their home baseball field, Tony Gwynn Stadium, is named in honor of the SDSU legend.
For most of San Diego State University’s history, their football team competed at the Division III & II levels. They joined the Division I FBS level in 1969 and joined the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. San Diego State tickets for football games were in high demand during the 1980s. SDSU football took home the WAC championship in 1986 and earned an invite to the Holiday Bowl against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
San Diego State recruited a running back named Marshall Faulk in the early 1990s. One of his coaches at SDSU, Sean Payton, went on to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. As a freshman at San Diego State, Faulk amassed 386 yards on 37 carries in his second game. He reached paydirt seven times. His yardage and touchdown totals stood as NCAA records for freshmen. Faulk finished second in Heisman Trophy voting after the 1992 season.
The Aztecs seem to have a knack for recruiting future professional athletes. Kawhi Leonard, who won NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors, was a member of the SDSU men’s basketball team from 2009 through 2011. His talents helped the Aztecs make the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years. Their 2011 run included wins in the first and second rounds against Northern Colorado and Temple. The eventual national champion UConn Huskies ended their championship run in the Sweet Sixteen. SDSU retired Leonard’s number in 2020, making him the first basketball player to have their number retired in Aztecs history.
