Fontana attended the Academy of Children’s Theater, in Richland, Wash. He also studied Theater Arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts before going to high school at Richland High School. He then finished the Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program at the University of Minnesota. 

In 2005, Fontana was a co-writer of the musical comedy Perfect Harmony. He also was the originator of the role of Phillip Fellowes V. He portrayed the titular character in the Guthrie Theatre’s production of Hamlet in 2006.  He then relocated to New York City. His first role was in an Off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks.
