Inspired by the pictures of One Thousand and One Nights, Nikolai started making musical sketches in 1887 with the goal of writing a complete symphony.

By the summer of 1888, he completed it, comprising four separate yet related movements that made up one theme of Oriental fantasy. Each section was named based on the stories from Arabian Nights, but in a later edition, Nikolai decided not to use them, wanting the listener to be taken on a fairy-tale journey winding through the Orient. His composition was not meant to be just four pieces played in a row, but a musical tale, made rich and deep by all the elements coming together. He kept the title because the name Scheherazade inspires the mind to prepare for a fantastical experience filled with magic and wonder.
