He is known for his facility in a number of unusual instruments including the bodhran and tin whistle.
Born in 1967 in Carbonear, Newfoundland, found a love for music as a child listening to the hymns sung in his local Catholic church. In the early ‘90s, McCann founded the band Great Big Sea, which became known for their rock and roll interpretations of traditional folk songs and sea shanties. Over the course of the next decade, Great Big Sea produced 11 gold albums, four platinum albums and two multi-platinum albums.
In 2013 McCann departed the group, releasing a handful of solo albums through the rest of the 2010s. He became particularly known for his charity work, collaborating with artists like Jeremy Fisher, Joel Plaskett and Sarah Harmer to raise funds for veterans afflicted with PTSD and victims of the Fort McMurray wildfires. Known affectionately to fans as “The Shantyman,” McCann has been praised for his soaring vocals and authentic folk sound.
